API Versioning In Spring Framework 7

Rossen Stoyanchev - Broadcom

There are many common techniques for API versioning. A quick search shows there are ways to express those in Spring MVC mappings. However, this only scratches the surface. Is the version semantic or a date, how do you compare and select a version, apply a default version, or reject unsupported versions? There are further questions about maintenance over time. Do you put a version on all controller methods to start in a new application? And do you update all controller methods again for subsequent versions even where nothing has changed?

Spring Framework 7 will provide built-in support for API versioning to give applications the tools they need to manage such an important aspect of REST API design. In this talk we’ll take a close look at this new capability, and we’ll also provide the context that surrounds it by reviewing common techniques for versioning, the range of advice on best practices, and having a look at real world examples.
